The other day I was riding with a friend, that I would rather leave anonymous, and I found myself gripping the seat of the car. At that moment, I just remember the sheer panic I felt as we went plummeting toward the oncoming red light. I am pretty definite that the driver of the car in front of us was also in fear for the bumper of their silver Jetta. After the abrupt stop that ensued I posed the question to my loved one:
“Speeding up to a red light?…”
Why are we doing this?
Well by we, I mean other people. I see it all the time. Can anyone tell me why the car is actually excelling toward an object that tells you that it is time to stop.
People continually put themselves in situations where they are propelling themselves toward an inanimate and ultimate metaphorical stop sign. The question I raise is, why is anyone pressing the gas at a time when they should be hitting the brakes.
I see this all the time, in relationships, in how people deal with jobs, or in picking majors for schools. There are just so many ways in which people refuse to see the red light at the end of the road. At which point, they will have to hit their metaphorical brakes and stop. And then regroup and start again. Exhausting!
I offer a much simpler suggestion. Why not slow down. Ponder the end game. Prepare yourself for the stop so it won’t give you whiplash.
And if you are lucky, you won’t have to stop. Hopefully, because you changed your speed early on, the light will turn green, leaving you free to coast onward, leaving the rest behind you…
